About Dream of Darkness

We are pushing tech and storytelling to fix our world. We believe reality is stranger than fiction, so we’re adapting real findings and questions by historians.

Instead of the usual corporate BS, you can see our live Asana objectives that we use to plan our 2-week sprints. We believe strongly that the games industry can improve by being accountable to players.

Our Squad’s Mission

1.Bridging the gaps between gamers, researchers, developers, and marginalised communities

Our goals are similar, but we exist in silos. Scholars do amazing research that doesn't reach the game dev process. Gamers desperately want to see fresh, exciting stories based on the newest research. Devs want to incorporate everything into their game but often lack resources. Meanwhile, marginalised communities are at best ignored or at worst exploited. We want to solve this problem by implementing full collaboration between scholars, the dev team, and the players. all while keeping marginalised voices at the heart of our collaborations.

2. Preserving Mesoamerican culture and heritage for a global audience

Our cultural heritage is not a thing of the past - it is alive and well today, and fiercely defended by its indigenous descendents. We want to bring the rich, diverse, and beautiful Mesoamerican cultural heritage to a mass international audience through our game, shining the spotlight on the Nahuatl language, Mesoamerican religion and mythology, and more. Our team hopes to be a sounding board for these descendant communities, respectfully privileging their needs and voices in our work through our open, community-sourced and collaborative processes.

3. Crafting a historically meaningful game based on the most exciting new research

We refuse to use history merely as a backdrop. We want our game to say something meaningful about the past, incorporating the most recent scholarly discoveries and arguments rather than falling back on old cliches and predictable narratives. Our work will therefore make the most of the widespread impact and educational potential of the video gaming medium.

4. Destabilizing dominant narratives and colonial lies through a diversity of perspectives

We're tired of seeing the same parts of history and same perspectives reproduced over and over. It's time for something different - time for a postcolonial perspective that breaks down colonial myths. We spotlight indigenous perspectives, women, and diverse genders and sexualities to challenge conventional interpretations of the past, privileging and centring the voices and stories of these neglected groups.
